Alanya Cable Car (Teleferik) — The Best Five Minutes in Alanya

There are views, and then there are views. The kind that make you stop mid-sentence, grab the person next to you, and just point. That’s what the Alanya Cable Car — or Teleferik as the locals call it — delivers, every single ride, every single day. In one smooth five-minute ascent from Damlataş Beach, you glide above the Mediterranean Sea, the Alanya Peninsula, the ancient castle walls, the Taurus Mountains, and the entire city skyline — all at once, from a glass cabin, with the sea breeze coming through the windows. It’s one of those experiences that sounds perfectly nice on paper and then turns out to be genuinely breathtaking in real life. Whether you’re heading up to explore the castle, chasing the perfect sunset shot, or simply want to see Alanya from a completely different angle — the cable car is, without question, one of the best things you can do here.

The Ride — What to Expect on the Way Up

The cable car covers a distance of 900 metres, connecting Damlataş Beach at the bottom with the castle area at the top, with each comfortable cabin able to accommodate multiple passengers — making it ideal for families, couples, and solo travellers alike. Cabins have a maximum capacity of 8 people, and if you’d like a private cabin for your family or group, that option is available for an additional fee at the station. The cabins depart frequently — a new cabin arrives approximately every 19 seconds — so queuing times are generally short outside of peak summer days. The ride itself is smooth, safe, and well-maintained, with large glass panels on all sides that make the most of those panoramic views. On a clear day, the perspective shifts constantly as you rise: first the golden arc of Cleopatra Beach below you, then the rooftops and minarets of the city spreading east and west, then the open Mediterranean stretching to the horizon, and finally the ancient castle walls looming into view as you approach the upper station. Five minutes has rarely felt so well spent.

The View From the Top

Once you step out at the top station, you’re already at one of the best viewpoints in Alanya — and that’s before you’ve even walked to the castle. The panorama terrace near the upper station offers an unobstructed 180-degree view over the sea, the peninsula, and the coastline in both directions. Golden hour before sunset is especially magical from up here, and plenty of visitors time their ride specifically to catch it. There’s a rooftop café and restaurant at the top where you can sit with a tea or a cold drink and let the view sink in at your own pace — and according to visitors, it’s surprisingly good value for the setting.

Alanya Castle — Right There at the Top

The cable car doesn’t just offer a view — it drops you off right at the gateway to one of Turkey’s most impressive historical sites. Alanya Castle, dating back to the 13th century Seljuk era, sits at the top with its ancient walls and corridors to explore, along with the remains of a Byzantine church, a Seljuk palace, an Ottoman mosque, and two residential neighbourhoods that are still inhabited today. From the upper cable car station it’s roughly a one kilometre walk along the castle road to the İçkale (Inner Castle) entrance — the road is manageable but uphill, so wear comfortable shoes. You can take the cable car back down after your visit, or for the adventurous, walk down through the historic castle district and the Old Town — a descent that takes about an hour and is absolutely worth doing at least once.

Practical Information — Everything You Need to Know

Opening Hours

  • Open daily, year-round — from 09:30 to 23:00
  • Hours may be slightly reduced in winter months — check locally on arrival
  • Evening rides are particularly popular and often quieter than daytime visits

Tickets & Prices

  • Current ticket price: approximately 525 Turkish Lira per person for a return ride — always verify the latest price at the ticket booth on arrival as prices are updated periodically
  • One-way tickets are also available if you plan to walk down
  • A private cabin for your group can be arranged for an additional fee directly at the station
  • Tickets are purchased on-site only — the main ticket office is at the lower station, near Damlataş Cave and Cleopatra Beach, and both Turkish Lira and major credit cards are accepted.
  • Online booking is not available through the official Teleferik platform

Getting There — The Lower Station

  • On foot: The lower station is located at the Damlataş end of Cleopatra Beach — a flat, easy 10–15 minute walk from the city centre and harbour area
  • By dolmuş: Local minibuses along the coastal road stop close to the Damlataş area
  • By taxi: Ask for Teleferik İstasyonu or Damlataş — every driver knows it
  • Tip: There are two entrances to the cable car area — walking a little further to the back entrance leads to the regular, more affordable standard queue

Good to Know Before You Go

  • ⚠ Important: The cable car brings you to the lower part of the castle area — there is still approximately a 1 km uphill walk to the İçkale (Inner Castle). The walk is scenic but warm in summer, so bring water
  • Best time to ride: Late afternoon for the sunset — aim to be in the cabin around 30–45 minutes before sunset for the best light and the most spectacular views
  • Beat the crowds: Summer daytime rides can get busy; evening rides are quieter and the city lights below make for a completely different and equally beautiful experience
  • Photography: The cabin windows can create reflections — position your camera lens directly against the glass for the cleanest shots
  • Accessibility: The cabins are generally accessible for pushchairs and standard wheelchairs; the castle itself, however, involves significant walking on uneven terrain and a lot of stairs.
  • Time needed: Allow 30 minutes for the ride up, views, and ride back down; combined with a castle visit or walk in the forest we recommend around 1,5 – 2 hours minimum. If you’d like to explore more of the historical alleys of the castle (including e.g. Bedesten, Ehmedek, mosques) and have a turkish coffee in one of the local cafes, its a half-day trip.
  • Combine your visit: Damlataş Cave and Alanya Archeological Museum is right next to the lower station — easily paired into the same outing before or after your cable car ride.
